Introduction:

The University of Oklahoma is now in the final steps to complete the upgrade to the Kaltura v7 media player, which will replace the legacy v2 player across our systems. The new v7 player brings faster load times, improved accessibility, better browser compatibility, and a modern, streamlined user interface.

You have probably already used the v7 player, it has been set as the default player on MyMedia.ou.edu since 2025. The Kaltura/MyMedia integration with Canvas was also updated for all new embeds starting in 2025. You will recognize the v7 player from the position of the interactive transcript on the right-hand side of the video (as opposed to below the video in v2 player). This Kaltura webpage shows side-by-side comparisons of the v2 and v7 players.
It is important to know that if you have added a video to you Canvas course or embedded a video onto a webpage in the previous 12 months, you have been using the new v7 player.

Next Steps:

OU is now finalizing our implementation of the v7 players starting on April 9th, and finishing on May 15th.

Here is the schedule for the final player updates:

  • April 9th, 2026: Update the default editing player to the v7 player.
This will update the player that you see when you are editing the metadata for a video
  • April 9th – May 16, 2026: Batch updates for legacy v2 embeds.
This process will update any videos embedded on webpages or added to Canvas courses before January of 2025.
  • May 16, 2026: Default quiz player updates.
This will update the player that you see when you are viewing a video with a quiz
  • May 18, 2026: Manual updates begin for any remaining legacy players.

What can I do?

There may be instances where a video that is embedded into a webpage or a Canvas course may not auto-update. You will need to complete a few steps to manually update your player.

Starting after May 18th, If you see a pop-up message at the beginning of one of your videos warning that your video player is deprecated, then you will need to update that video manually by re-embedding it into your webpage or Canvas course.

Sample of deprecated player warning image is shown below.

The best practice for any embedded videos, either on webpages or in Canvas courses, is to re-embed the video with the new player information. If you are seeing the deprecated player warning before May 18th, you can manually update your videos following the instructions above.
