Children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty managing stress and anxiety during times of change or uncertainty. This emotional dysregulation is a characteristic of ASD and can often result in challenging behavior. Challenging behaviors may occur if the student does not have the ability to seek or accept help when stressed, calm down and find alternative activity before outburst occurs and/or recover after an outburst.
